Screencaps for Ep 3.18 added

I have just added the screencaps for Ten Dollar Murder to the episodes' page. A number of taxi driver robberies culminates in the murder of an undercover police officer who performs as a cab driver. While investigating the robbery case which just turned into a homicide matter, Mike is asked by an old friend of the robbery department, Officer Irene Elliot, for help as she is afraid of losing contact and influence to her teenage son, Bobby. Irene's and Mike's ways had crossed just the night before when Irene tried to catch a hooker on the run inside the SFPD lower parking garage. Being an old friend of Irene's husband too, late Officer Don Elliot, Mike complies her request to talk to her son who, in her comprehension, is missing a father figure. We as the audience already know that in fact it is Bobby and his teenage buddy Charles 'Tiny' Reynolds who spend their leasure time robbing the San Francisco cab drivers. However, it is a taxi driver's observation who was knocked almost unconscious that one of the robbers had a remarkable buckle on, a shiny Indian's head. Irene discovers that her son obviously took her late husband's service revolver, but she cannot handle the situation and tries to suppress what is the obvious truth. It is Steve who - rather by chance actually - finally nails the mystery when he interviews Bobby in his high school gym's changing room after his friend Tiny was found dead in a car, intoxicated by exhaust gases, as he recognizes the notable Indian head buckle. Bobby still thinks he can play the 'innocent boy' part but Mike and Steve are already on his trail. In a desparate effort to get away with murders, Bobby threatens both Mike and Steve with his father's gun - but when he tries to escape the dramatic confrontation, Irene realizes what he did and takes matters into her own hands.

Filming locations include several nightly spots at Fishermans Wharf, precisely around Jefferson and Taylor Streets, where Bobby Elliot and Tiny Reynolds are getting on the cabs. Mike's and Steve's original case leads them to Ghirardelli Square and the (now-demolished) Transbay Transit Terminal, and we are also taken to the underground parking lot of the SFPD. Irene Elliot's house is located in the Sunset District, whereas Bobby kills Tiny at Lands End. Mike and Irene are having dinner in a Japanese Restaurant, however, there are no exterior shots but the glimpse of the street scenes through the restaurant's window in background seem to imply it was actually filmed in Japan Town. Bobby and Elliot are working in a car repair garage in Haight-Ashbury, next to Golden Gate Park. Following the shootout in front of the Elliot house, Bobby is taken to the Davies Campus of California Pacific Medical Center where the epilogue scene was filmed.

Catching up with unidentified filming locations!

Thanks to fellow fans Mark Dober and Tamie Yusa-Ogawa, I can remove two more spots from the unidentified filming locations list.

Tamie identified the 'Pacific State Hospital' in season 3 episode Target: Red, where sniper Jerry Schilling's son was treated, to be the former Shriners Children's Hospital in the Sunset District. Although the hospital was finally closed, and moved to a new hospital complex in Sacramento in 1993, the building itself was designated a San Francisco landmark and remains in its location on 19th Avenue.

Mark quickly identified the building of Jacob's apartment in season 3 episode Jacob's Boy to be located in the southern part of the Western Addition on McAllister, between Steiner and Pierce Streets, just one block away from Alamo Square.

Screencaps for Ep 3.17 added

I have just added the screencaps for Endgame to the episodes' page. When veteran street cop John Baker is found dead, the police department as well as the D.A.'s office are alerted since the suspected self-murder is just another one in a row recent suicides (or what looked like) among the force, suspecting a mole in the department since Baker had made an agreement to make a testimony in front of the Grand Jury about local mobster Al Doyle's businesses and corrupted people, including police officers, involved. Due to Baker's primary district, the red-light patch around Broadway, young vice officers Rogers and Hill are being involved in the investigation. When Mike and Steve are going to see and to talk to a hooker who had offered information on Doyle, the prostitute is also found dead in her apartment - but Mike spots the killer, and in the following chase Steve is side swiped by the fleeing henchman. To Mike's surprise, Jeannie is showing up in the hospital after she heard on the radio about the severe injury of Steve - but she is not allowed to see him. Little does Mike's daughter know that her father and Captain Devitt contrived a plan to have Mike being downgraded to street service for a faked disobedience and making him look a disgruntled cop looking for compensation against the department he served for decades. Mike immediately needles all the businesses Doyle is involved in and soon receives the response they wanted. Their entire plan is put in danger when unsuspecting Jeannie discovers that Steve is actually doing well, playing cards by himself under police protection in his hospital room. It is her intuition, though, which finally provides the decisive proof that cops Rogers and Hill are involved and performing as moles to Doyle. Nonetheless, an unsuspected move of the young vice officers puts their plan - and the life of Mike - in immediate danger.

This episode provides a good insight into San Francisco red-light district of the 1970's around Broadway. In the opening scene, Sergeant Baker talks is Doyle in the heart of his district. Apart from several other street scenes filmed around Broadway, we are taken to Russian Hill where Baker's apartment is located, as well as to Romolo Place where Mike and Steve find hooker Lily Marlene dead in her apartment. Doyle's yacht is anchored at the Marina Yacht Club, and Steve is hidden at the San Francisco General Hospital. We are also taken to Mike's house on Potrero Hill, and Mike is picked up - allegedly drunk - by Rogers and Hill in a bar after they left Roland's Cocktails at Lombard and Fillmore Streets. The key scene in which Rogers discovers that Mike and Captain devitt are obviously trying to set a trap for the mole was filmed inside the actual San Francisco Police Department headquarter building on Bryant Street.

Help needed with Unidentified Locations!

Folks,

I just made an update to the unidentified locations quiz page and would appreciate all your help. I have put together an illustrated list of yet unidentified filming locations discovered in the first three seasons of the series (up to season 3, episode 16, 'Letters From The Grave'). All screenshots were taken from the official DVD in original size (768 pixel), so what you see is what is possible at the best (no larger view or anything like that, unfortunately).

Plus, I have added some (hopefully helpful) notes concerning the specific scenes and plot of the episode and the location in question - to the best of knowledge. If you got a clue or just hints or ideas, please let me know.

The next update including screencaps and extended summary for Endgame maybe delayed by a couple of days due to the Easter holiday season. Have a great one. :)

 

Screencaps for Ep 3.16 added

I have just added the screencaps for Letters From The Grave to the episodes' page. When the skeletal remains of a human body are found during construction works below the former cell building of former federal prison Alcatraz, police crime lab investigation soon identifies the dead body to be former inmate Lew Kovic. Mike immediately recalls that Kovic was supposed to have escaped 'The Rock' some 20 years ago, so the unsolved escape case turns into a homicide matter. Stone also recalls that Kovic's now grown son, Lew Kovic Jr., is a Deputy D. A. and a conscientious lawyer. Interestingly, when talking to Lew Kovic, Mike is told that Kovic's mother frequently receives letters from South America, doubtlessly in his father's handwriting and with his signature. We are also introduced to Lew Kovic's uncle - his father's brother - Jon Kovic, who immediately comes to see his nephew and mother. After Mike has left the house, we also learn that Lew Kovic in fact took the rap for mobster Nick Lugo in a murder several years before. While investigating on Alcatraz Island and checking the interview protocols following the alleged escape, Mike and Steve discover certain discrepancies, so that their focus is set on former prison guard, Herb Stebbins. Meanwhile, Kovic Jr. is also trying to find out the truth but Stebbins – or the person he is running across at Stebbins' shabby apartment – would not talk to him. Soon after Lew Kovic Jr. has left the house, the man is is hit by a car and dies; it turns out that he was mistaken for Stebbins but actually is a fellow bummer of his, Homer Wilcox. When Kovic confronts mobster Lugo, and the actual Stebbins is found dead in the Bay, things are pushing on – and with Kovic asking for a valid motive to someone, and interviewing an inmate who was involved in Lugo's former business, it becomes evident that an unexpected third party gets involved: Lew Kovic's uncle, Jon, who raised him as he was his own son. But with his nephew being very close to his uncle's secret – who still has his contacts to Nick Lugo, and whose life now depends on his nephew's search – Jon Kovic does not seem to have a choice – or does he? The final fate is being decided on a location where it started: Alcatraz.

A good portion of this episode illustrates Alcatraz Island at that time the federal penitentiary had been closed for some 20 years, and the area was designated a national recreation area just three years before this episode was filmed. I will try and include this episode on the locations page soon, so you can compare the look of Alcatraz now and then. We are also taken to Dolores Heights where the Kovic house is located, and down to the Embarcadero and Nick Lugo's office building at Lombard and Battery Streets. Former guard Stebbins is living on a shabby apartment at the western border of South of Market, and a couple of scenes were filmed inside the actual SFPD headquaters building on Bryant Street. I am still trying to identify the location of Phyllis Stebbins' apartment building; please check out the Unidentified Locations Quiz page. Last but not least, Lugo picks up Jon Kovic in his classic Mercedes 600 Pullman at 111 Sutter Street and takes him for a short ride around the Financial District and Uion Square, before this episode's climax takes us to Alcatraz Island again.
